A large Melbourne squad comprising of +30 players travelled to Derby's ground on Thursday evening to meet Derby 1st XV in a preseason trial.
This was the first pre-season match of Melbourne's 2014-2015 season and was broken down into three 25 minute matches. New Head Coach, Matt Derbyshire, used the game to assess his full senior squad giving every player a mimum of 25 minutes game time.
A comptetive side started proceedings very well with a tight contest ending the first 25 minute session 10-7 with Ashley Stringer scoring a scintilating try for Melbourne running through the heart of Derby's defence.
Coach Matt Derbyshire rang the changes for the next two session giving everyone a run out. Derby's experience and organisation told as they took a firm grip of game and ran in a couple of scores in each session whilst Melbourne struggled to gain conitunity in attack.
All in all a good test for the senior squad which was still missing several key and experienced players.
