Mellish Ladies started the game with some optimism after a good cup run last season and improving performances week on week.

After a brief exchange of possession from kick off Mellish gained some territory and after deciding to go down the blindside, with a great run from Jess Wade breaking a few tackles, they got the games first try through some excellent off-loading and fly half Cara Bryan dotted the ball down. 5-0 to Mellish.

Fiveways hit back almost instantly with a try of their own but the conversion was missed (5-5). After a few stirring words from skipper Gemma Hampson, Mellish restarted and hit tackles and breakdowns in numbers with the pack in particular bossing this area ensuring they got back in possession. The pressure paid off and Cara again crossed the try line to give a 10-5 lead.

Again, Fiveways came back at Mellish and a great break on the openside lead to their 2nd try of the game (10-10). However, Mellish regrouped and maintained focus on the task in hand and got back in front with another try from Cara following a flowing move with support on the shoulder at every tackle allowing the off load at every opportunity creating a wonderful team try and ultimately leaving Mellish with a 15-10 lead at half time.

The message at half time was to maintain focus & shape and keep up with the 1st up tackles and work at the breakdown. After the restart the ball was recycled through a few phases with the forwards securing a clean ball for the backs to ship wide. A great supportive loop from Cara again saw her on the end of a move that was finished with a 40 metre run in and the 4th try of the game converted by Charlotte Browning (22-10 to Mellish).

Fiveways refused to give in coming back strong again and after defending resolutely for phase after phase Fiveways eventually forced their way over and converted the try making the score 22-17. After this the team spirit remained high and it was clear Mellish knew they could get over the line to score again, and that they did as Toni McMonigle finished off another try giving Mellish a 27-17 lead.

Oncemore Fiveways pressed Mellish in the last few minutes and got over for another try with 6 minutes to go leaving the score at 27-22.

Mellish showed how far they have come since the beginning of the season defending firmly and forced the turnover from a penalty. From the resulting penalty they retained possession and wound the clock down to record a thoroughly deserved win with the final score at 27-22 in an awesome team performance from all 20 players.

Credit to Fiveways OE for making us work until the very last minute and we wish them well for the remainder of the season.
