an email from a parent following yesterday’s U14s cup defeat.

My Son went out for lunch with his Granddad after the game. Before they left the house I was filling him in on the details of the match and conveyed the feeling of the team and supporters over how the game was won and the conduct of the oppositions' players and coach.

He then told me the story of a victory that his rugby team achieved 55 years ago. He attended a Catholic boys grammar school in Liverpool and after a 63-0 victory one Saturday morning, the team were elated and triumphant over their score.

On the Monday morning in assembly, the headmaster announced the results of the previous weeks' sporting events and then asked the U15 rugby team to come up on to the stage. They were all a bit surprised as this wasn't the usual procedure during assemblies, but they walked on to the stage believing that they would receive a special mention for their win.

The headmaster then went on to teach them the lesson of humility. He congratulated them, but then went on to make them feel somewhat embarrassed by the way they had handled the victory.

His lesson was 'Humility in victory, magnanimity in defeat.'

To me, that sentiment summed up the game yesterday and I am very proud of the fact that my son plays for a team and a club that instils those values in their players.
