League Leaders take all 3 points
silly error's cost Bridge the game
Going to the team that are currently top of the pile was going to be a hard enough game, but with several players missing we went with a threadbare squad that included 3 under 18’s players yet to make their debut and the every ready Karl Roberts (player coach) making the squad.
We started brightly against a well-organised team and both teams cancelled each other out. On 20 mins a lovely through ball by Callum Davidson gave Andy Wannop a half chance that just went the wrong side of the post. A few minutes later some brilliant work between Ryan Wood and Callum Davidson put Callum free down the left and he whipped in a pinpoint cross that Andy Wannop connected with only for it to clear the crossbar.
Some very out of the ordinary decision from the referee got both teams a bit agitated and for a few minutes that game got a bit heated as some blatant fouls were not given and free kicks given for nothing.
On 33 minutes, Aled Steele for Bontnewydd got the ball out on the left and as he entered the box he tried to take on Owain Roberts he tripped over the ball and to everyone’s amazement the ref pointed to the spot. Penalty converted 1-0 to Bontnewydd.
Youngsters Liam Billington (1st start of the season due to work commitments) and Gethin Davies marshalled the midfield brilliantly against a very experience Bontnewydd midfield.
Just on halftime a corner from Ryan Wood was floated to the back post and Richard Evans hit it 1st time (nearly as perfect as last year’s goal home to Bontnewydd) only to see if flash past the post.
Half Time Bontnewydd 1 – 0 Menai Bridge Tigers
The Bridge started the second half the same way that they finished the first half trying to play some neat football but the final ball eluded everyone.
60 mins – Liam Billington – replaced by Elliot Parry-Jones (senior debut) Liam had run his socks off.
66 mins – some brilliant link up play between Callum Davidson and Dion Williams put Dion passed the full back and without breaking stride whipped in a top draw cross that Ryan Wood met with a bullet header that passed the keeper before he could even blink. Just what the lads deserved.
Bontnewydd 1 – 1 Menai Bridge Tigers.
The pressure that the bridge were putting on the league leader now started to show as Bontnewydd changed their formation and brought on a holding midfielder to try and steam the flow.
72 mins – Andy Wannop replaced by Tom Glyn Owen (senior debut) Andy put in a brilliant shift.
75 mins - Gavin Jennings pounced on a weak throw out from Dion Lewis and made it 2 – 1
Fair play to the boys they continue to press for the equaliser but with the very last kick of the match Aled Steele broke clear and slotted the ball passed Dion Lewis to make the score 3-1
If I am honest 3 -1 wasn’t a fair reflection on the game, but Bontnewydd punished our silly errors
Full Time – Bontnewydd 3 – 1 Menai Bridge Tigers
Scorer – Ryan Wood (sponsored by Glandwr Butchers)
Man of the Match – Richard ‘Beno’ Evans (still looking for a sponsor)
