Good Battling performance by the Bridge
massive 3 points, 1st ever league victory at Bro
If you were to go by what the local media had to say over the last week or so, this game was billed at Bro (the favourites to win the league) home to Menai Bridge Tigers (the team to finish runners up).
When looking at the calendar it said Wednesday 15th August 2018, which should have been a lovely summers evening and the prospects of a bumper crowd for a cracking match,... how wrong were we about the weather from mid afternoon it was nothing but strong wind and heavy shower. On arriving at Bro the pitch looked in mint condition, some of the lads that work away had made the effort to come home for this local derby that how much they wanted to win.
The bridge started with the same eleven that started versus Llanystumdwy, and 3 changes on the bench Callum Hughes (returning from injury), Lewis Hughes and Guy Hughes. The plan was to play against the wind 1st have and try and limit Bro to long distance efforts. The first 10-15mins both teams tried to play football but the wind and the rain was a getting to be a big obstacle for both teams. On 18 mins a free kick just inside the Tigers half was drilled by Darren Gowans and it cleared the Bro defence and Sion Hogan was the 1st to react and lobbed the out rushing keeper to make it 1 - 0. Tom Parry , Ryan Owen and Dafydd Healy were marshalling the defence well and Clarkey had to be on his toes as some long range effort were swerving in all directions. Andy Williams had an effort on goal on 37 mins which Clarkey made a pinpoint save only for the ball to drop at Andy's feet and the prolific scorer he is made no mistake. Bro then upped their game and started to put more pressure on the Tigers.
Half time Bro Goronwy 1 - 1 Menai Bridge Tigers
Playing with the wind in the second half we knew we had to try and keep it simple and not just punt the ball forward. Darren Gowans had a couple of long range free kicks that the bro keeper had to be on his game to keep out.
Kev Roberts and Lewis Hughes came on for Shaun Lock and Callum Davidson.
As the we entered the last quarter of the game it was obvious the next goal was more than likely gonna be the winner.
A quick throw in caught Bro ball watching and a cross to the far post was met by Sion Hogan who smashed the ball into the back of the net. In the dying seconds of the game Darren Gowans smashed a 30 yard free kick against the foot of the post.
