History
A brief history of The Merch.
The Merchants Arms Cricket Club was formed in 2001 at the Coronation Pub in Southville. Current team member John Sprague was landlord of the Coronation at the time and decided, along with some regulars, to start up a cricket team. Other current members who were there from the start include Simon Frost, Barry Morgan and Mark Winston with Andy 'Wadze' Jones joining not long after.
Therefore, the Merchants Arms C.C. started out as Coronation C.C. and set about getting some friendly fixtures going through some pub contacts. The team didn't win a lot in the first couple of seasons but much fun was had !
As time passed by and John had left the Coronation as landlord we found that more and more players drifted away and numbers were low for a while. Current skipper Simon Frost started to get some friends involved in playing and slowly the team was rebuilt into what we have today.
Although the team continued to play under the Coronation C.C. banner for a while we decided to rebrand to Merchants Arms Cricket Club (M.A.C.C.) following the 2008 season. John had taken over 'The Merch' on Hotwells Road and he serves great beer so it was a no brainer !
The club is in good health at the time of writing (Sept '09) with team places being fought for and regular victories in the scorebook.
Whenever opposition hear the shout of 'Cmon the Merch' they know they are in for a tough battle !
