Manager Gavin Macpherson offered up his thoughts as the Blues kick-start their Southern League campaign tomorrow away to Dorchester

My responsibility to this football club is, come next August we are playing Step 3 football. We have to get enough out of the squad to achieve that.

It's a tough start for us. I’m not only talking about the opening game, if you look at the first few weeks they keep coming. But the first one we have to think about is Dorchester. They are one of the league favourites, when you throw in a 3G surface it all makes for a tough ask. They have some experience in their ranks so we go there under no pressure.

We’ll try and get a result, that is our priority. We will go into every game looking to get something. I know the probability is that won’t happen but if you install those beliefs in the players then the hope is they respond in a positive way.
In my opinion, I’ve got a talented young group. Many haven’t played at step 3 before so a quick adjustment might be needed. I’ve learnt a lot in preseason, there have been elements that have surprised me and we’ve sought to enhance those in training. Equally, there have been things that need work so it’s a balance.

I believe this group can grow, the club is now thinking long term, not short term. Whatever the situation on the pitch I believe they’ll keep giving everything and that is all I can ask. We’re missing a few of our more experienced players mainly due to injury but whatever squad is picked they should be confident in their ability, it will be interesting to see our response now points are on offer.
