A complete performance, a new addition, injuries and more youth progression are all things Macpherson reflects on...

I genuinely believed yesterdays game was a new chapter for us. Without any disrespect to Frome the surface conditions were testing and the first time we’d really faced the kind of surface this season.

Speaking to the players before the game I mapped out a clear way of playing and if I’m honest it took until the 2nd half for us to really get to grips with it. Frome made us work very hard for our slender lead at the break but I was delighted with the response in the 2nd period. It’s another tick in the box for me, a comfortable victory in very testing conditions made for a great journey home.

It was a blow to lose John Gilbert so early in the game. It was a bad knock on the top of his foot that required stitches. It’s not an injury that come about from something being torn or twisted, it was quite simply a clash so I’m hoping to have him back in a couple of weeks.

You could see it was restricting his movement but he wanted to carry on and give it a try. It was obvious to me he was limping around and unfortunately we had to take him off.

Robbo came on and did extremely well, it’s great to have players you trust to not only do the job but also give you the same commitment and energy.

Jack Mazzone was also substituted late on with a thigh problem. 18 year old Ross Murdoch the next in-line to provide that energy after a fantastic week scoring five for the U23s.

The squad is getting a bit thin, I’ve brought in Kelvin Karanja from Bedfont and Feltham Fc to boost options and elevated 3 more from the U23 side who clearly have the ability to make the step.

We've also added depth to the squad with more young players emerging. Those players continue to do really well and have been signed on 1st team forms. The only way to avoid complacency and keep driving performances is to have that competition.

Merstham on Tuesday will see changes. I have fond memories of the Surrey Senior Cup with then Jim’s team beating Merstham in the final a few years ago. But I’m keen to see others play against what will be a very good side and a massive test.
