Pontypridd were joined by fellow MDRU Clubs Bargoed and Merthyr, who will now appear in the Principality Premiership, in the National 7s yesterday.

All three Clubs gave youth a chance in what was a fantastic day of sevens rugby at the Cardiff Arms Park.

Merthyr were the first of the District Clubs on to the paddock, but found Gwent outfit Cross Keys a little bit more experienced and drilled as they were beaten 40-7.

There was an all Mid District Club affair in the penultimate match of the last sixteen as Bargoed took on Pontypridd. It was to be the Rhymney Valley outfit who were to come out on top with a deserved 36-5 win to book a quarter final spot.

Both Merthyr and Pontypridd now dropped into the plate tournament and its quarter final draw. Merthyr were drawn with Premiership Champions Ebbw Vale whilst Ponty would have to overcome Newport iif they were to make the last four.
The Young Ironmen were excellent in their game and held on for a nail biting 24-21 win but Ponty couldn't have similar success and were beaten well by the Black and Ambers who went on to eventually win the Plate.
Merthyr's reward for their victory was a semi final against RGC where they again showed some good touches before eventually going down 26-12 to the North Walians.

Bargoed were given a tough quarter final Cup tie with Carmarthen Quins and can be proud of their efforts despite going down in the end 35-12.

It was Llandovery who would go on to win the crown of Fosters National Sevens Champions for an excellent third time in four seasons.

A mention must go out to Pontypridd back Geriant Walsh who suffered a nasty leg injury in the tournament. We all send him our best wishes for a speedy recovery.
