Match report A team V Darlington 3's

6 years ago By Paul Johnson

The A team back on track with a good victory over neighbours Darlington.

After the dissappointment of the defeat to a well drilled Gateshead team the week before ( 24 - 3 ) the A team proved to be far too strong for Darlington 3rds which was interesting in itself. The A team were expecting to play the Bulls second team, but Darlington switched things at their end thinking their 3rd team were better suited to a game against ourselves and their second team should fair better against West Hartlepool 3's. This proved wrong as both Darlington teams suffered a defeat in the end.

The tone of the match was clear after 10 minutes when Boro were 14 nill ahead after stand in captain Robbie Small had bardged his way over from 5 meters out and scrum half Michael Duffield snuck over from close range too.

By half time Boro were completely dominating the game scoring 43 unanswered points. Amongst the scorers were Sam Nixon, Michael Duffield again and Ash Kearney with a brace of tries.

At the stroke of half time both teams fly halves engaged in a hand bag moment which them both being given a 10 minute spell to cool down. This allowed charlie Kearney to find out the meaning of half the words he had been called! Boro also took the opportunity to give Michael Peebles a break calling upon the versitile Jonno to come onto the wing.

Darlington battled on to their credit, and with the assistance of one or two 50 -50 calls going their way limited Boro's scoring to just 3 ties in the second half and scoring one themselves. The first came after Mark Kerrush made a strong run and offloaded to Jonno on the wing who after selling a dummy or two raced over the whitewash. Ash Kearney scored his 3rd after a strong run and Chris Rance and Gavin Fingerland combined well as a pair going the length of the field before Rance collected the scoring pass to go over the line.

With Sam Nixon converting 3 and charlie making one conversion the referee logged the final score as 65 - 7. However Gavin claims he did also score but no one can remember this.

Man of the Match - not awarded as all played reasonably well
DOD - John Blackburn for his legendary new slant on the taking of a "mark" catch by making the shout, before, during and after he had caught the ball.
