Bad day as key decisions go against the stags

East Preston 3-0 Midhurst

People say that there can be game changing moments in a game of football, but in Midhurst’s game at East Preston on Tuesday evening there were two such moments and neither of them favoured the away team. The first one, after 30 mins with the score 0-0, following an EP free kick, came when Gary Norgate was elbowed in the face, a cast iron penalty to everyone except the officials; in fact the Referee and Linesman both said that they knew something had happened (possibly Norgate’s bleeding mouth was a giveaway) but neither of them saw it happen, so they couldn’t give it. The second was 5 minutes into the second half when Lewis Hamilton was blatantly tripped in the box, and everyone thought that this one must be a penalty, but again nothing was given to the consternation of the Midhurst players. Goals change games and who knows what might have if one, or both, of these incidents had resulted in penalties and possibly goals.
As it was though, for the first 30 minutes were the better side, working extremely hard and enjoying the greater possession, unfortunately with little penetration. After that EP worked themselves into the game and took the lead on 35 minutes when Hunter’s 25 yard strike gave keeper Aaron Jeal no chance at all. Half Time 1-0. In the second half, following the second non-penalty decision at one end EP increased the margin at the other when Scott Dormer’s crossfield ball was cut out by Smith, who then played in a suspiciously looking offside Rance who rounded Jeal and scored the second goal. Within 90 seconds the same two players had combined, with Rance again being the scorer, albeit with a deflection off George Morris’s heel to completely wrong foot Jeal.
In conclusion, EP deserved their victory but the scoreline was particularly harsh on Midhurst, who could nevertheless take quite a few positives from this defeat.

Team: Jeal Hunt (Casselton 80) Grantham Morris May Lee Martin (Sheldrick 74) Hyde (Kirby 69) Dormer Hamilton Norgate.
