Plenty of good approach work from Midhurst but wastefulness in front of goal cost them dear

Roffey 2 - 1 Midhurst

With quite a few 1st team players not available for this game it was a test for the depth of the squad, and despite the score line the test was passed, as they should have won the game had they turned chances created into goals scored. Although there was plenty of good approach work from Midhurst, there was a continuation of the wastefulness in front of goal that has dogged them throughout the pre-season. There was an excellent free from Lawrence Hyde from 30 yards that produced a superb save from Roffey's keeper, who somehow managed to get fingers to the ball to touch it onto the crossbar and out for a corner. There were also three 1 v 1s with the keeper which, frustratingly, came to nothing, resulting in a half time score of 0 - 0. Midhurst then took the lead with a very good goal from Luke Sheldrick; after playing a 1 - 2 with Ant Kirby he unleashed a left-footed pile driver into the top corner with the keeper just an interested spectator. But following some changes Midhurst lost their fluency and Roffey took control and after 63 minutes equalised from the penalty following a foul from George Morris. This was then compounded by what turned out to be the winning goal when Roffey scored again, this time with a close range header from a corner, that gave Aaron Jeal no chance and followed some non-existent marking. But back came Midhurst to create another three excellent chances which should have resulted in goals to win the game, but one was saved by the keeper and the other two headed off target.

Squad: Jeal Hunt Casselton O'Leary Morris Day Hyde Martin Castle Sheldrick (L) Kirby Sheldrick (J) Dormer.

This was the last of the pre-season friendlies and the League games start next Saturday away to Seaford and on the following Tuesday away to East Preston, who are already being considered as promotion candidates.
