Steyning Town 1-5 The Stags

Fantastic 4 goal salvo by debutant seals emphatic victory

New signing Gary Buller scored 4 goals on his debut in an excellent 5-1 away win for the Stags who were still realing from the previous games' drubbing. Ian Saunders scored the 5th goal via the penalty spot to ensure the visitors won their first league game of this new season.

Changes were made to the Midhurst formation and line-up as boss Trevor Waller looked to get the Stags season up and going. Neil Reilly was welcomed in for his first start of the season and he was joined at centre half by Assistant Manager Ian Saunders. Mike Page and Rob Browne filled the full back positions. After missing the previous game, Ollie Rowland stepped back into midfield and new signing Gary Buller partnered Steven Boston in the striking roles. The other change saw last seasons ‘keeper Paul Williamson start in goal as Ian Knight was struggling with a slight knock.

This game was a real early ‘6 pointer’ with neither side having achieved a win so far. The opening 15 minutes was quite cagey but soon the Stags had the lead and their confidence visibly rose ten fold. Some impressive inter-play in midfield found the unmarked Gary Buller at the far post and he duly sored his debut goal. More was to come from the striker, when 10 minutes later he gambled that Big Boz would win his header and Gary pea-rolled his and the Stags second goal.

As half time approached Steyning were struggling to make any inroads into the Stags half, however the visitors were passing the ball and finding space with relative ease. In the 43rd minute Big Boz again supplied the telling pass that found Buller in space to smash home his hat-trick goal.

Half Time: Steyning Town 0-3 The Stags

The hosts came out of the blocks quickly forcing Midhurst on the back foot however a solid defensive display saw little rear guard action for the Stags ‘keeper. The second half was alot more scrappy however Midhurst always seemed to look dangerous when pushing forward. Indeed Gary Buller claimed his 4th goal, on an excellent debut performance, when a long Stags clearance was not cleared well and Gary lobbed the ball into an empty net from approx 40 yards.

Sean Dummer, who had replaced the injured Boston at half time, was looking very lively and from a particularly determined run he was upended in the area and Midhurst were awarded their first penalty of the season. With both recognised strikers off the pitch assistant manager Ian Saunders took responsibility and duly notched the Stags 5th and final goal. Disappointingly Steyning scored a consolation goal in the 88th minute when a deft header beat the impressive Paul Williamson.

Full Time: Steyning Town 1-5 The Stags

Man of the match: Gary Buller, fantastic debut with 4 top quality goals.

Manager Trevor Waller (pictured) said after the game “ we had a good intensity about us tonight, defensively we looked much tighter from front to back. The midfield always looked dangerous and the front line always looked a threat with Gary being particularly impressive. Hopefully Boz’s injury isn’t as bad as we think but we won’t and can’t get too carried away with this result, we need to go to Seaford on Saturday and try and get another”.

From a Midhurst point of view, its a great feeling to get such a big win after our drubbing at the weekend. Good individual and team performances which hopefully can be replicated in the next few fixtures.
