Saltdean United away
Al's green jumper!
Today's match took us to Saltdean - which until Thursday wasn't where we were expecting to go! Originally we had a home game v Sovereign Saints but they called their postponement option as did Saltdean's opponents. A couple of e-mails later and with the help of our Fixtures Secretary, Becky, we were able to bring this game forward from later in the season.
We had won quite a close game at home when we had a few injuries but I remembered that Saltdean played well in that game and indeed they had not lost any game by more than 2 goals this season, so we would need to be at our best to win.
To win by 3 goals, and score 5 was therefore an excellent performance especially as we were in our own half for spells of the game and so had to defend really well. As always, we know that we are going forward we can score goals and so it proved it again.
Kaden - Has played so well this season it is a real surprise when he lets in one he might have saved. Importantly, did not let it affect him and normal service was soon resumed - made a wonderful save from a free kick late on.
Callum - Highlight was a surging run down the line in the first half followed by an excellent cross which nearly led to a goal
Billy M - Unlucky with a well struck penalty that was saved but was as solid defensively as always and had to make a couple of crucial last ditch tackles
Daniel Pr - Must have been battered and bruised by the end as was in the wars. I feared he might roll straight down to the bank when he was running full pelt in the second half and got tripped up. Top class as always
Georgia - I especially noticed Georgia's defensive work today, she has really adapted to our formation and knows when to go forward and drop back. Really pleased with her display
Ben W - Like Georgia, knows our formation and adpats to playing on either side of the pitch really easily. He works hard and his hard work helps us to keep 3 up front
Steffan - He is hoping for a goal so was unlucky when his shot went over the bar and another one saved. I am sure it will come soon, but as an up and down centre midfielder, he played really well and won a lot of crucial tackles
Felix - Another goal plus an assist when he fooled everyone by playing a corner straight along the floor (I am sure he meant that...) but again the most positive was the energy and tackling in midfield
Sam - A deserved goal - chested in from about a foot! I think this was Sam's best game of the season as he won a lot of balls up front when it may have been expected the defender would get there first
Alex - What can I say - 3 more goals! The 3rd goal was particularly brilliant as well as crucial to put us 4-2 up but all 3 of them were well taken. Alex looks dangerous every time he has the ball close to goal
Daniel Pe - Best work was a little bit deeper than usual but got free a couple of times, and a good jinking run set up the corner for our 2nd goal
Ben R - A very good option to have on the bench because Ben offers a versatility than can adapt to game situations. He is also very game aware so knows exactly what to do in a given situation
Finlay - Always enthusiastic and will give the team a much neeed burst of energy when he comes on. Tries really hard for the team
Billy I - Another who is adaptable and knows that are various different roles that I might ask him to do. Can pass the ball really well and there was a great pass late on that nearly led to a goal.
Thanks to Claude, Rob, Kevin and Matthew for their help over the weekend. It is invaluable! I could hear the encouragement from the parents during the game and that always helps the players I know. Lastly, thanks to Al for running the line - the highlight of my weekend was finding out from Ben what it means when Al is wearing his green jumper. If I remember, I will let my reader know next time..
