Seaford Town Hornets away
The one with the playground
So I left my last report with Al's green jumper which apparently means he has a hangover! (according to Ben). With my work do being the day before training, I made sure I did not need my own metaphorical green jumper, but when the mid session invite came to go onto another pub, I said 'no I have training tomorrow'. How very sensible. Or perhaps I am just an old bore.
With my clear (ish) head, training went well, a couple of players even said they enjoyed it, so in a happy frame of mind we set off for our 56th trip of the season to the Seaford/Eastbourne area. My greater familiarity with the area did not yet extend to the Walmer Recreation Ground. It has 1 very large pitch and a playground. I thought we had the odd playground over our way, but to a boy (and girl) my players swarmed into the playground as if they had never seen one before pre match and fell into 3 categories - daredevils, wannabe daredevils but are not tall enough to get onto the equipment and sensible. Oh and a 4th category - lost. With players in tunnels, up ropes etc I did not realise that 2 of them had not arrived yet. Fortunately, kick off was delayed because of the previous match on the pitch had not finished so the timings worked perfectly. 1 of our 'technically - but as it turned out not actually - late' players arrived and said 'we were not lost, we just went to the wrong place' (he remains nameless but is our tallest defender). I count that as lost. (Still I remember the last time a player claimed to have got lost was for a HOME game [he shall also remain nameless but is also a defender and missed a game for the first time on Sunday]).
Kick off finally arrived, no-one had fallen off the swing and onto the team talk. As we play in the same micro area each time, we had the same referee as for our Saltdean away game. 'He gives more free kicks than other referees so let's make sure we don't give any away' I wisely said. Everyone nodded.
15 minutes in and we are 1 down to a free kick and I was looking for my managerial green jumper a la Cloughie as I had more of a headache than on Saturday morning.
It seemed like ages we were 1 down, but Michelle's goal times tell me it was only 7 minutes and 5 minutes later we were ahead. The team had settled down and were now playing well. At half time, I slightly over emphasised the 'bit lucky to be ahead and we are kicking up the hill in the 2nd half' to keep the team up to their work and we came fully into our own with 3 2nd half goals, all of which I thought were excellent goals. Yet again, the team worked hard for a deserved win and they definitely have a real aptitude for keeping their heads and making sure they keep playing in our style rather than panicking. I was proud of them again.
Kaden - We have been trying to practice Kaden's kicks. He was certainly accurate pre-match as he hit me in the back! Another aspect of his game where Kaden is improving.
Daniel Pr - Usual buccaneering runs down the wing and some great last ditch tackles. Excellent as always.
Billy M - Solid and strong in the tackle as always. Got a cut in the second half on his leg which took me ages to clear up. Played well.
Ben R - Fantastic shot past the bewildered goalkeeper which hit the post - shame it was our goal!! This was actually Ben's best performance of the season, really disciplined
Ben W - Very brave as got injured early doors and carried on as long as he could, before appearing later as an emergency defender. Did well in both
Felix - Got stronger as the game wore on and was a decisive factor in our victory. Cannot do without him in midfield!
Steffan - A really hard working captain's performance up and down the pitch. When Steff and Felix control the midfield we look really strong
Georgia - Really adding the tracking back side to her game and then shows real poise going forward. Excellent on the ball.
Sam - Moment of the match for me was his brilliant goal. Sam missed a chance early on and in the past his head might have gone down. Not anymore, he kept going and got a really deserved goal. A real step forward
Alex - I wondered if Alex could get 20 league and cup goals by Christmas - he did! No headaches when Alex gets the ball! The 3rd goal was especially brilliant as it was the most perfectly timed run to beat the offside trap.
Daniel Pe - Proud Dad moment as his goal was fantastic. Dan is at his best when he cuts in from the left. Beat 3 players and then placed his shot well.
Rhys - Great to have Rhys back, we always discuss the game when he is on the sideline with me and he really took on board what I asked him to do. Great performance.
Billy I - Once he had sorted his blisters out, he was ready to come on and as willing as ever tried hard when he got on the pitch. A great passer, he nearly set a couple of goals.
So the Christmas break arrives. I am thrilled to bits with how we played as a team so far this season and 6 league wins out of 8 is a really great achievement. I am looking forward to resuming in the New Year!
