New Earswick 4 Milford u12’s 18

It was a typical mid-June scorcher as we set for York in anticipation of a tough task against an always strong New Earswick team. The tea and coffee were very well priced at 50p a cup, but the significance of the price soon diminished as the tepid liquid hit the lips. Much happier to pay 80p at Milford and have it hot! Despite this let down we remained positive and were all looking forward to the game.

The boys had given Brighton the honour of starting the game, and he took full advantage and propelled a kick which caused Earswick a problem and caused a knock on….great start! As we had suspected, the Earswick defence was solid and strong, making yards tough to make for all. This inevitably put us under pressure, and Earswick crossed to lead early on by 4-0.

We needed something to lift us, and Ben Brown stood up by making 3 consecutive tackles, lifting the team and leading to a hard earned break from Callum to score. Kav converted and we were in the lead 4-6. Our Captain was now leading the way showing great determination to put in 3 big tackles on the trot and eventually earn the ball back to score again, converted once more and it was 4-12.

Earswick continued to put us under serious pressure and only solid defence from all, but especially Jonno, Abdul and Dalen kept us in the lead. Once we had soaked up the pressure we were looking a little better with the ball. Yards remained very hard to make due to the excellent Earswick defence, but also because we looked a little static when receiving the ball. As ever however, there was no lack of commitment from the boys on the pitch, and before long Callum escaped the tackling and completed his hat trick, again converted by Kav to leave the half time score at 4-18

The second half proved to be scoreless, a credit to both defences. Mentions were noted for Mitch on his return for excellent tackling, as well as outstanding defence from Reece,Jonno,Abdul, and Dalen. The final score of 4-18 represented a very tough game well won. The result keeps us well in touch with West Bowling at the top of the table, but still plenty of room for improvement in attack. Defence to this observer was first class. Well done boys! Go Marlins!
