Millbrook RFC

No Passion = No Points

by Dan Wade

Millbrook failed to breakdown Petersfield defence especially in the first half combined with two back chat incidences to the referee so therefore lost a close match to a more determined team on the day.
The match started disappointingly as the kick off went straight into touch with a scrum on the half way line awarded to the home team. On three minutes a break down the middle of the pitch by centre Mike Phippard made ground but lacked support. Millbrook tried to break down the home side’s defence continuing to break the gain line by in particularly Full back Mark Colmer and Wing Mike Randell only to be stopped by some dogged tackling and good support from Petersfield’s retreating forwards. The first half, of the game was played mainly in Petersfield half with only one successful penalty awarded on 28 minutes for not ten, taken by fly-half Richie Colmer 0-3.On 34 minutes Petersfield against the run of play in what must have been their first real attack scored the first try in the left hand corner 5-3. Four
minutes later with Millbrook still recovering the home team struck again from a line out and drive to touch down a second try 10-3.

The second half started as the first with Millbrook dominating and on 42 minutes Richie Colmer slotted over his second penalty following several passages of strong forward play. Eight minutes later the first penalty for verbal dissent led to the home team kicking a difficult penalty.13-3. Millbrook struck back on 53 minutes again following good forward rucking and Flanker Wayne Allen stopped just short of the line but quick ball was fed to Centre Dan Wade who crashed over right under the posts. The conversion that would have levelled the score however struck the upright and bounced back. 13-11.Both teams were now fighting hard to dominate and a more even game ensued with some excellent tackling in particular by both Flankers Garrie Silverthorn and Wayne Allen plus centre Mike Phippard. On 63 minutes Richie Colmer attempted a difficult kick near the right touchline but the ball struck the cross bar and the
rebound was collected by the home team and despatched. Replacements Mike Trench and Ryan Jones were introduced to add some fresh legs but could not change the outcome. On 75 minutes Millbrook gave away a second penalty for referee dissent but the kick was unsuccessful. The last five minutes Millbrook threw everything at the Home side and with the last play ran out of their own try line but on the halfway line Petersfield tuned over the ruck and their number eight was glad to run into touch to
finish the game.

Millbrook’s performance displayed at times some nice passages of play during the game but poor passing, dissent, unlucky kicks for goal and lack of support gave the home team the advantage.
