Windsor v Milton Keynes

by Daniel Edwards

The game played on a well kept royal pitch with Winsor castle as a back drop, set off at a frantic pace with Milton Keynes having the Lions share of the play, and took the game to the home side, after 15 minutes they were award the first in range kick for a crack at 3 points, up stepped the on form Phil Powell to open the scoring.

Almost by return Winsor answered with their own penalty immediately taking the score back to even.

Milton Keynes were still well in the mix of the game, good defence by Windsor kept the Milton Keynes forwards at bay, to within 10 minutes of the half time whistle, when from a Winsor line out Milton Keynes stole their ball and passed down the line with slick passing by the three quarter line, on to the winger Dan Rolfe, Dan still had 30 minutes before reaching the try line, but he powered his way through the traffic to score a great try, unfortunately Phil Powel missed the conversion.

With just a 5 minutes to go Windsor were awarded a kickable penalty, sadly for them it sailed past the up right.

The last highlight of the half with the Windsor winger trying his luck going around the blind side of Milton Keynes flanker Dave Brown, Dave totally flattened his opponent and in true Rugby respect helped him to his feet and returned him to his team mates as the first half whistle blasted with the scores delicately balanced at 3 --- 8 to the visitors.

The first scoring chance of the second half fell to Windsor after just 3 minutes with a penalty awarded for off side, their kicker not having the best of days with the boot, missed again.

On 15 minutes the game suddenly exploded as the Windsor side started to become frustrated that the unthinkable could happen to them, and lose to the City men from North Buck`s, a rush of blood by the Windsor prop with a foal tackle and he received his matching orders for 10 minutes, from the referee, from the awarded penalty to Milton Keynes Phil Powell kicked for territory and the line out 15 metres out, the ball secured by the pack and Milton Keynes applied their rolling ball routine lead superbly by the master Steve Christie steering the maul over the line and Ashley Hill the man with the ball in hand crashed to the ground to score, unfortunately Phil Powell missed the conversion, but the score moved on to 3—13.

The Windsor crowd well lubricated from the pre match dinner their language towards the referee and the visiting team become a little unsavoury as they could see that their team could well lose this vital game for both sides.

The game continued at pace and on another Milton Keynes attack, were awarded a penalty 10 metres into the Winsor half, Phil Powell proceeded to kick the sweetest of penalties, taking the score to 3---16.

The City team now really pushing on and on the half hour scored a try to the blind side of a scrum, touch down by Rob Lasbrey, this was disallowed because the referee was the wrong side of the scrum and said he was unsighted so could not allow the try !!

Winsor staged a last ditch effort and to their credit managed to score in the corner, conversion missed and 40 minutes were up.

With 10 minutes of extra time played the very large fast Windsor broke away and was heading clear and free to the line, a fantastic chase by Dan Rolfe catching and tackled the Windsor player to the ground, this defiantly the most important tackle of the day denying Windsor of a losers bonus point, absolutely necessary as the point stack up towards the climax of this season.

The game finished 8---16 to Milton Keynes

Next week Milton Keynes are at home to Wootton Bassett 3 pm kick off
