Milton United Patron passed away

The funeral of George Cannon, patron of Milton United FC, took place at Saint Blaise Church, Milton, on Friday 4 April.

Born near Wallingford in the summer of 1914, George's family moved to Milton when he was a young child. In his younger years George started a business transporting goods locally with a horse and cart, which grew into a highly successful transport and packaging concern providing employment for numerous persons in Milton village and surrounding areas.

A keen sportsman George played football and cricket for the village team's, and was an avid golfer, holding membership of both Frilford Heath and Drayton Park golf club's. It was only in recent years, after breaking his hip in a fall, that George was unable to continue with his golf, prior to that he would be seen most mornings pitting his golf skills against his cohorts at Frilford.

George's involvement with Milton United started as a youth and he played well into his forties, he was instrumental in re-establishing the club following WW2. After finally hanging up his boots his involvement with the club continued on the committee and as a supporter. His son's John and Philip, and grandson Thomas, all carried on the Cannon name as Milton United players.

The respect George held within the community was clearly shown by the attendance at his funeral service, the village church was full with mourners both seated and standing. The respect held within the football community was also apparent, with many past players and committee members of Milton United attending, along with professional footballers of the past who had come to know and forge long standing friendship's with George.

George Reginald Hall Cannon passed away just short of his 100th birthday, he will be fondly remembered by the village of Milton and Milton United FC for many more years to come.
