Following a 52 -7 win over Taunton the previous Saturday, the players’ confidence was high for the fixture and there were again plenty of players to choose from.
Tor fielded a young side, and looked to play a fast open game in the first ten minutes but the Barbarians defence was well organised and put pressure on the away side which forced mistakes. At the set piece the Barbarians excelled, winning all of their lineout ball and retaining possession at the scrums.
During their first set play following a lineout outside the 22, the ball was passed out wide to centre and captain Rob Trapnell
who chose a great line to run in under the posts unopposed. The conversion was also added by Trapnell. With an early score under their belts Minehead continued to be ruthless, hunting for the ball at the breakdown and leaving the visitors with little option on the ball.
A second try soon followed after a good period of possession from the Minehead forwards with trademark runs from props Elliott Davis
and Chris Ware
giving Minehead the edge. Number 8 David Harris
took a short pass from the Scrum half 10 metres out and showed shear strength to carry three defenders over the line and score his first of three tries for the afternoon. The conversion was again added by Trapnell. By the end of the first quarter Minehead were truly in control and playing all of their rugby in the opposition 22.
Minehead played well to the referee and reacted quickly when awarded an advantage. The third try came from Flanker Justin Harris
who took a quick tap 5 metres out, awarded for failing to roll away at the ruck.
Harris managed to wriggle his way over the line to bring the score to 19-0 and allow another easy shot at goal for Trapnell. With less than 10 minutes to go of the first half, Minehead continued to work well at the break down. Matt Grove
at scrum half chose direct running lines and offloaded to supporting forwards.
made a quick 20 yards down the blind side just before the break only to be tackled by the last man, but offloaded to Ware in support who crashed over in the corner. The subsequent conversion was missed. The visitors were to score the final points of the first half with a breakaway try against the run of play.
A midfield handling error by the Barbarians gave the Tor winger a chance to chip through and then dribble the ball to the line and beat the home fullback to score a try. The conversion was missed. Half Time score 24-5.
The second half saw several changes for the Barbarians, and fresh legs made the game faster but strewn with errors. The visitors seemed resigned to defeat and slipped off the tackles with David Farmer
, Jake Pound
and Ashley Ahmet
continuing to probe the back line and get over the advantage line.
Gaps appeared all over the park and David Harris
added a further two tries to his first, with good supporting play, and Captain Rob Trapnell
added a further two tries to give him his hat trick.
Three conversions were added and Minehead picked up the bonus point win for the second week running. Man of the match was awarded to Chris Ware
for his all round play.
