Rugby Canada is pleased to announce a number of age-grade coaching appointments in its U20, U19 and U18 programs.
Dave Butcher, who is also Rugby Ontario’s High Performance Manager, will join Jeff Williams’ U20 coaching staff as a forwards assistant.
"I am incredibly excited about this opportunity to be part of developing the next generation of Canadian national players,” Butcher said. “I am looking forward to getting my first sight of all the potential players at the U19 Canadian Rugby Championships (CRC) later this week.”
Furthermore, a CRC U20 All-Stars team will be announced in the coming weeks to play North Otago on August 3rd at 6pm ET/3pm PT at Westhills Stadium on Vancouver Island.
“Having this game against North Otago will act as part of our selection process moving forward but will also strength the program through competition,” said Ken Goodland, Rugby Canada’s Coordinator, National Player Development and Talent ID.
Tony LaCarte, who acts as BC Rugby’s Rugby Development Officer, has been hired as a backs assistant for Canada’s U19 program.
On the U18 side, Mike Curran, who has experience as an Ontario Blues’ assistant as well as head coach of the Blues’ U19 side, has been named Canada’s U18 head coach.
“I’m excited about the opportunity to build this program within the Rugby Canada pathway and work with the next generation of national players,” Curran said. “The U18 program has been invited to play in Europe next April which is very exciting for the program and will be a huge benefit to the players development in preparing them for the next level.”
To further development across the country, a process of naming several regional coaches to support the U18 and U17 programs has begun.
