Blues 2nd XV In First Place After Dominanting Balmy Beach RFC Fourth XV
Blues Extend Win Streak to 5 Games
The Mississauga Blues Second XV continued to look to be the class of the league with another 8 try performance to defeat Balmy Beach, 50 - 10 to kick off the second Friday Night Lights of 2018.
The Blues scored early and often and featured 20 players as they continue to build momentum. Chris Lewis and Cameron Hurst led the scoring with 2 tries each. Other try scorers were Miguel Toussaint, Joe Kitchen, Nicholas Holmes and Phillip Hill. Kieron Smerdon added two conversions and Hill had another 3.
The Blues while undersized in the scrum were able to control most of their own ball. Chris Lewis drew first blood with a #8 pick off the back of a 5m scrum. The second try was set up by a monster run by Panda but a controversial decision by the referee disallowed the try, calling a knock-on at the touch down resulting in a Balmy Beach scrum at the 5m line. Mississauga regained possession and another scrum led to another Chris Lewis try.
The Blues went up 17-0 after a Miguel Toussaint scamper down the left side, earning him the admiration of Mike Curran and possibly some additional physio gigs with the Blues as a result. Just before the half, Cameron Hurst stretched out his long legs and ran away from the field, scoring from 55m. The Blues took a 24-0 lead into the half.
The Blues made four substitutions at the half but the scoring parade continued. Cameron Hurst scored his second on another explosive run and the Blues found themselves up 31-0. Balmy Beach finally responded, scoring two tries of their own, but man of the match Joe Kitchen stopped the come-back with a strong solo effort from 20 m out.
Try number seven was one for the fans, featuring acrobatic off-loads and over the shoulder passes involving Kitchen, Toussaint and Zeidi Collaku leading to a long run by rookie Nicholas Holmes for his first senior men's try. The game ended with fullback Phillip Hill picking off an errant Balmy Beach pass at centre and unbelievably taking it all the way to the house without blowing out a knee or succumbing to concussion!
Next up for the Blues is a battle for top spot with the undefeated Bay Street Pigs who are currently sitting in second with a game in hand. It should be a beauty! Come early for Friday Night Lights, Friday, July 20th and cheer your Blues onto the championship. Kick-off for the Second XV is at 7:30.
