Wheels Come Off In Mid Wales
Suicidal Defending Cost Mold Dear.....
Much could be said about the playing conditions but ultimately it was the same pitch for both sides. Granted, the home side are probably used to playing on it and tailored their game to suit.
One thing that Mold did differently at Llanfair as opposed to the earlier part of the season, was that they took the lead and doubled it rather than concede it to the opposition. Llanfair set out their stall early playing a game best suited to the conditions, using the channels and no-nonsense football. Mold tried to play to feet on a very heavy pitch which was holding the ball up making the passing game very difficult. Llanfair could have opened their account on 15 minutes but a great save from Leigh Williams in the Mold goal, after Llanfair's James Davies found himself unmarked in the Mold box, prevented the home side going ahead. Four minutes later, Jordan Stafford went through on goal and cooly slotted past the Llanfair keeper to put Mold ahead and then Rhys Nash doubled the advantage when he went through on goal and fired home. On the half hour Llanfair had a goal disallowed for offside before Mold's Cal Lavelle saw his effort rebound off the cross bar and the rebound scrambled to safety. Meanwhile at the other end, Leigh was called into action again with another fine 'point blank' save to deny Llan. Ben Jones headed home a Llin Davies throw to pull Llanfair back into the game after Mold failed to deal with the long throw. The home side's tails were up and Josh Astley drew the game level for half time with a sweet left foot strike from 12 yards after being given far too much room in the Mold box.
Just after the restart, Mold's Alex Weatherby left the field injured and Harry Murray replaced Lee Emberton at left back while Embo partnered Matty Hughes in the centre of defence. Mold went ahead again on 50 minutes thanks to an Ant Williams direct free kick which beat the Llan keeper for pace and squeezed in at the near post. Llanfair came back at Mold time and again and the pacey James Davies caused the Mold defence continuous problems. His hard work paid off on 61 minutes when he pulled Llanfair level, again after tormenting Mold in their own box before firing into the bottom right hand corner. Suicidal defending a minute later allowed Astley to cross for Davies to net yet again and score what proved to be the winning goal. Mold rang the changes with a double substitution, Arron Davies and Lennox Beddowes replacing Lee Jones and John Davies but it was too little too late. Llanfair dealt easily with any further Mold attack and then countered quickly to pressure the Mold defence. Llan could have made it 5 late on but the woodwork came to Mold's rescue.
