The Alex 1st Team beat Chirk AAA 3-1 in the NEWFA Challenge Cup final at Airbus UK

A sizeable and noisy crowd watched The Alex take on WNL Premier Division side Chirk AAA on the 3G surface at Broughton for the NEWFA Cup.
The first half was a close contest but despite Mold having the better of the chances it finished 0-0.

In the second half Mold started to take more control and were rewarded with the opening goal of the evening from the head of Alex Ahmed.
However, Chirk fought back well and levelled the score with a strike from the edge of the Mold box.
Ross McDowell had been causing the Chirk defence problems throughout the game and it was his run into the box that led to Mold's second goal. As he went past the defender in the box he was hauled down and the ref pointed to the penalty spot before producing a red card. John McAuliffe stepped up and stood up well to the pressure as he calmly slotted home to put The Alex back in front.
Despite being a man down, Chirk continued to push forward but didnt really test John Burns in the Mold goal to any great extent.
Playing a controlled and disciplined strategy Mold cvarved out the clearer opportunities to increase the scoring but failed to convert some very good chances until the final minute when Lewis McNally scored from close range to make it 3-1 to The Alex with no time for Chirk to come back.

When the final whistle went shortly afterwards the celebrations started for the Alex as they picked up their 3rd Trophy in 12 month.

The Alex were deserved winners but credit to Chirk for a very creditable performance.

Manager Sean Rogers said "I'm delighted for the lads, their form after the first 7 games of the season was fantastic and they have won this trophy on merit. They have worked really hard to stay focussed and fit after finishing the league season 5 weeks ago. It's also a great night for the club, it's 30 years since we last won this trophy and it follows on from winning the WNL Premier Division last season, the President's Cup at the start of this season and a good finishing position in the Huws Gray Alliance. We will enjoy this success and then start thinking about next season"
