6 Degrees from the Azzurri

5 months ago By Ian Nathan

When Italy take on the Wallabies this weekend in Brisbane there will be a Moorabbin connection to the Italian tourists.

Mike Budd's son Dean received a call up for Italy at the start of their 3 Test match tour against Fiji, Scotland and Australia.

Mike, also a lock, played at Moorabbin from 1979- 81. He then returned home and captained North Auckland for 6 years before taking up a role with a rugby radio show for many years. A Moorabbin touring side played against Mike’s Whangarei Old Boys on the 1982 New Zealand tour. Mike was last here for our 50th Anniversary and was the interviewer for our “On the Couch” with BJ Williams at the club.

Dean Budd who's path to representing the Azzurri was via Northland, the Blues, the NEC Green Rockets (Japan) and then Benetton Treviso, where he has played for the last 5 seasons. His club stats page have him listed at 1.96m and weighing 103kg. It's reported that Dean loves to run with the ball in hand, is a fierce defender, a good jumper and is famous for his fancy offloads. We look forward to seeing those skills on display against the Wallabies.
