Sam and his family are valuable contributors at the Moorabbin Rugby Club, with his Dad Gerry working on the Club Committee, his Mum Luisa managing a team (actually 2 teams), and his younger brother Sol plays as well. Sam also played last year, but after deciding to help the club out by becoming an assistant referee/touch judge he found that he really enjoyed the experience of helping out at the Junior matches.
As a result Sam decided to take things to the next level. Over the last few months Sam completed the Foundation course, the Level 1 law exam and then passed his on field assessment last weekend. Sam is now an accredited Level 1 Referee and is qualified to referee matches from the U13 level on up.
Sam joins Hamish Bertram and Ian Ray as refs who have ties to the Moorabbin Rugby Club and we would like to wholeheartedly encourage more of our club members to consider taking up referring as a great way to stay in touch with the game and even give back to it as well.
We hope that Sam enjoys this new direction with his rugby and wish him all the best. And who knows, maybe down the track we could even see him step up to referee at a National or even International level.
