The second of our glimpse at Morley RFC's past.
MAROON MEMORIES 2
And now a favourite memory of many older members of Morley Rugby Football Club: Scrum half JohnWarren clinching a Yorkshire Cup final victory - delight on his face - with this match winning try in 1973, making the score Morley 10 Roundhay 9.
John, a former Cross Hall and Morley Grammar School boy, went on to graduate at St Luke’s College, Exeter.
A snippet from the club’s 125th anniversary special publication (2003), written by the late Fred Pickstone, a former club president, and Scatcherd Lane panto supremo, read: “The period running up to our centenary year, 1978, saw Morley RFC rise to the heights. The Maroons won the Yorkshire Cup for three years running, and four times within six years: 1972, 1973, 1974 and 1977. They created new records, and established a new National record for points scoring.”
He also said: “The 1969-1970 season brought forth two of the players who had much to do with the successful 1970s - Richard Binks, and David Bloomer - who joined the club in 1969 and immediately made an impact with his goal kicking and incisive running from full back.”
