An Improved Performance
Morley edge a tight one
Recent games against Yarnbury have been tight affairs and today's game was no exception. In the main, Yarnbury have tended to come out on top so today it was pleasing that the spoils went to the Maroons.
For the fifth time in 7 matches Morley conceded 2 early tries and found themselves trailing 14-0 after the opening 15 minutes. However, they did not panic and worked their way into the game. The lads are gradually getting used to the new structures that have been introduced this season and, by sticking to these structures, Morley were able to dominate possession for the rest of the half. This possession was turned into 3 well worked tries and Morley led 17 - 14 at half time.
The 2nd half was a more even affair with neither side particularly on top. Morley scored next, with multiple phases of play eventually leading to a score out wide. However, Yarnbury do not give in and scored with a close range effort with 6 minutes to go.
In previous seasons Morley would tend to panic in this situation but this year Morley have learnt that they can keep the ball for long periods if they stick to their structures. Aggressive defence saw Morley obtain possession and then they simply kept the ball. This sustained possession eventually led to Morley scoring a last minute try in the corner following yet more excellent team work.
All 5 of Morley's tries were well worked team tries following sustained periods of possession. Hopefully the lads are beginning to realise that when they stick to the structures they retain possession, stretch the defence and the tries do eventually arrive.
Today's performance was a big improvement on last week but there is still a long way to go. Not conceding 2 early tries every week would be a start!
Special mention to Lewis who scored 2 tries on his debut. We're starting to get our troops back and there's a rumour that, for the first time in 3 seasons, we may well be at full strength by the time we play our next fixture in a fortnight's time.
Onwards and upwards!
