As you may or not be aware, England Hockey has a new version of the game being pushed out across the country to not only enable regular players to engage in a less formal and more social version of the sport but also to attract new players or ex-players back into the game. This is called RUSH hockey and some of our players are already involved in the tasters being ran out of the Center for Sport in Newcastle which is proving very popular.
Both Gareth Mellor and myself are working in close partnership with the England Hockey rep for the North East, Lynne Dobison to develop our own league to be ran after Easter.
We were very fortunate to receive a small grant from Sportivate to assist with buying some equipment and to assist with promotion of this league.
After the Easter Holidays, we are hoping to run a 2hr weekly league (final day TBC but Thursday is looking like a fore-runner atm) for any one over the age of 16. Squads are made up of 7 or more players with 5 players being on the pitch with 2 substitutes allowed on the night. I am hoping that this will be a MIXED league and by no means is it solely for members of the men's & lady's sections, if anyone is interested they could even field a work/business team.
The aim of running this league is to not only increase participation but also so increase awareness of the club by attracting new people to take part and hopefully lead to some new faces becoming members next season.
There are still a few factors to be decided upon and dates to be given the green light but as it stands, this is how the set up stands;
8 Week competition beginning the first week after Easter Holidays (Thursday 19th April-7 June) from 7-9pm
On the final week we could have a BBQ Social at the club to mark the end of league and have a family fun evening?
Teams will be mixed and made up of at least 5 people with 7 allowed to 'attend' on the night.
Games last for 40 minutes, broken down into 4 x 10 minute periods with a short break after each period to change ends/drink etc.
No special equipment is needed and there are no goal keepers so no need to worry about pads etc.
Squads will pay a up front fee of £60 (TBC) to cover any pitch hire and all proceeds are put back into the HOCKEY section. (squad of 7 players = £8.60 each for 8 weeks of activity)
Hopefully the bar will be open for people to buy drinks etc-Ritchie please confirm.
Please see www.rushhockey.co.uk for further information.
What we now need is to assess peoples interest in playing. We would need 8 Squads who are committed to playing regularly to make this a success. we will be opening this up to members initially but we will also like to invite teams from other local clubs (Tynemouth, Shields, Whitley bay, Alnwick, Newcastle, jesmond Parish etc) to register interest too.
If you are interested in playing in this league, please let me or Gareth know by the end of next week by which time further information will be available regarding finalised times/dates.
If players are keen to play but are not able to form a full mixed squad, just send us your names and we will formulate a squad for you.
All the best and let me know about all of the above. The more we get, the better it will be!!
