Morpeth Hit JPC For Six

Consitt Hat-trick gives Morpeth Six Goals and Six Wins

Morpeth made the short trip to Newcastle to take on JPC 1st XI, in search of their sixth consecutive victory. The Longhirst based outfit expected a tough encounter, and knew they would have play well if they were to return with all three points. The away side put the emphasis on delivering a strong first half performance to get into a winning position.

Morpeth began the game in impressive fashion. From very early on, their high press nullified any threat that JPC looked to offer, and made it very difficult for them to get out of their own 25 yard area. Without the ball, Morpeth chased down and pressured their opposition, generally working hard as a unit. When they had the ball, Morpeth demonstrated their ability to play a simple passing game and enjoy large spells of possession in the opposition half. Midway through the first half, Morpeth were rewarded for their hard work as they broke the deadlock. Ian Foster’s short corner strike was neatly deflected in on the left post by Captain Ritchie Brown. The next passage of play saw JPC looking to find the equaliser, but weren’t able to create any real pressure due to the Morpeth defence keeping the forwards quiet. Fairbrother, Dye, Cook, Mulligan and Mellor all stuck to their defensive responsibilities which gave keeper Sam Read very little to do. As the half went on, the away side knew that if they could grab another goal before half time, they would be in a very strong position. And they did just that when a surging run from Adrian Dye allowed him to play in Craig Consitt who fired home from close range to open his account. JPC were clearly unsettled, and Morpeth capitalised again with their spell of pressure and added a third. This time Morpeth playing the ball out from the back, allowing David Breakey to play the ball through to Ian Foster. Foster faced with the advancing keeper, and calmly pushed it underneath him to find the back of the net.

Morpeth came out in the second half full of confidence, but knew the job was only half done. A change in tactics saw JPC go all out attack, playing with 5 forwards in an effort to get back in the game. This gave them more threat in the Morpeth half and they were able to win a couple of short corners. The first of which was well defended by the Morpeth runners, and the second brought keeper Read into action as he pulled off a neat save to his right. Morpeth managed to ride the wave of pressure and keep their clean sheet intact. From this they were then able to get back on top and add their fourth of the game. Ian Kendall the provider as he played a disguised pass across goal, where Consitt was on hand the tip in on the back post. The same duo then paired up again as Consitt completed his hat trick. A strike from Kendall rebounded off the keeper, and Consitt was on hand to flick in to the right corner of the goal. Morpeth then wrapped up their emphatic victory minutes from the end, as Ian Kendall netted to give Morpeth their sixth of the game.

Morpeth will now look to their final four games of the season and have their eyes on a top three finish.
