Morpeth 2nds Come Crashing Down

Morpeth 2nds travelled away to face recently relegated Newcastle Medics 1sts.

Morpeth were hoping to improve upon their slight dip in performance but playing Newcastle Medics 1st XI was always going to be a tough fixture. Morpeth 2nd team captain Gavin Malecki was taking no chances with this fixture and therefore turned up.

After a detailed review of how best to shatter the opposition with a flood of hockey brilliance many of the players introduced themselves to each other for the first time. Due to a swathe of injury, sickness, absence and secondment the Morpeth 2nd team ranks were thin on the ground. Thankfully veteran/seasoned/junior players were on hand to fill the gaps and bolster what would have otherwise been barely enough to fill a five-a-side fixture.

To add to the challenge of the day, Mother Nature decided to throw in some high cross winds and lashing rain into the afternoon’s hockey making ball control difficult and the pitch surprisingly slippy.
From the off Morpeth realised that it was an uphill battle but the tactics set out at the start of the game were proving fruitful with Morpeth breaking up the Medics play and frustrating the home side. After 15 minutes of absorbing the pressure from the home side the deadlock was finally broken by Newcastle Medics. 1-0 up the home side seemed surprisingly agitated by Morpeth play and a swathe of stick tackles were applied to the Morpeth players. This saw two yellow cards being issued to the Medics players throughout the game giving Morpeth a bit of respite. Just before the close of the half the Medics side scored their second goal.

With the start of the second half there was a different Medics side on the pitch, after 5 minutes of play the Medics scored their third goal from open play. After this point the pressure seemed to drop off the Medics side and they were cruising. The young fit side began exploiting wing play and rolling subs, the fitness of the Morpeth side began to falter and then the floodgates opened. The final result was a 10-0 loss for Morpeth but the score does not truly reflect the grit and determination showed by the Morpeth side however, there was a feeling that had the full 2nd team been present the result would have been much more favourable for Morpeth.

When all was said and done the true winners of the evening were the unsung heroines going about their everyday business without any formal accolade or official recognition. Serving girls of the shark-bar: we salute you.
