2nds Return to Winning Ways

With three games remaining in the season the league could not be tighter at the top as any 2 from the Top-Half 6 can yet go up.

Morpeth 2nds are well up in that mix, and know that all they can do is win their remaining fixtures and sit back to watch how their competition does.

The 3 points dropped last weekend at home against Hild Bede were still strong in the Peth’s thoughts and it has made the objective for the remaining 3 fixtures very simple. 3 wins, 9 points and no less.

First up to face the Mighty Peth was Durham City 2s. A strong side with a good mixture of youthful enthusiasm and aged experience.

Morpeth got off to a great start, and should have been 1-0 up very early on. Pressing high a long corner from Danecki found its way to McLean whose swept shot was well saved. The ball deflected to Jamie MacDonald on the far post who, caught by surprise, managed to put his shot against the post and stray off the sideline. Agonisingly close for the youngster who was keen to see the back of his unlucky goal mouth performance from the previous week.

Morpeth continued to play the ball around well, with little troubling the defence, let alone keeper Jackson. The deadlock was broken late on in the first half with Morpeth’s first short corner. The initial strike was saved into the path of Danecki at the top of the D who returned it to the injector, Shafiq sr. ‘Shaf’ then scooped his shot into the goal off the bottom of the cross bar with world class precision.

Morpeth were unable to reach the half time break with the lead though as a short corner conceded with minutes to go managed to get scrambled over the line following a series of fortunate deflections and decisions. This would turn out to be one of the few times Jackson would be called into action.

The men in Green & Gold approached the second half with the attitude that they just needed to keep up their passing and patience and the chances would follow.

The battle in midfield remained as fierce as ever, meaning that chances would have to be taken if the objective of 3 points was to be achieved. Morpeth were then handed a fantastic opportunity when they were awarded a Penalty Flick after a shot was deflected into a melee of players and the visiting strike force were bundled off a clear goal scoring chance.
Danecki stepped up and guided the ball into the large space left by the small keeper who dived the wrong way. 2-1 to the Peth.

Morpeth took this confidence forward and continued to press well in attack, and a number of short corners followed. The third and final goal coming from a well worked move Sander sweeping the ball for Jamie MacDonald to finish well at the far post. The goal the young upstart was searching for!

A tough and competitive match finished 3-1 in the favour of the visitors giving them a well-earned 3 points. Two fixtures remain. 6 points are there for the taking…and Billingham are the next opponents who will visit Fortress Longhirst next week.
