Report: Mossley 0-0 Droylsden
Goalless in New Year's Derby
The first fixture of 2018, played in torrential rain, ended goalless as Mossley and Droylsden battled out an entertaining and occasionally feisty New Year’s Day 'derby' at Seel Park.
As goalless draw’s go, this was one of the better ones with both sides creating plenty of excitement for the 310 fans present.
Mossley thought they had taken an early lead when Bloods keeper Branagan spilled a cross and Adam Latham appeared to have forced the ball over the line before the keeper recovered. Match photos proved a goal should have been awarded but the officials were having none of it.
Mossley keeper Oliver Martin was in action soon after saving from Sefton Gonzales as Droylsden began to take control with Luke Daly the main protagonist.
Rio Ahmadi saw his cross shot clip the bar as Mossley again threatened but the visitors also went close when Liam Caddick saw his effort cleared off the line by Keenan Quansah.
Just before the break Ollie Martin made a great double save to again deny the lively Caddick.
Martin again came to Mossley’s rescue saving at the feet of Luke Daly and Caddick had the ball in the net only to be ruled offside.
At the other end, Tom Dean headed narrowly over from a Matty Crothers’ free kick before Branagan made a good save to deny Crothers as weather conditions took a turn for the worse.
Mossley came close to breaking the deadlock with ten minutes remaining as substitute Ash Leather broke clear on the right wing and his cross saw Adam Latham’s header clip the bar. Leather was again involved as he burst through but a heavy touch allowed the advancing Branagan to hoof clear.
Droylsden substitute Steve Hall had a great chance for the visitors when through one on one but Martin was able to palm over his under-hit effort and in the closing stages Sefton Gonzales headed well wide when he should have done better to leave the result scoreless at the end.
