Worthington Mid District Cup 2nd Round
The Old Firm progressed to the quarter final of the Worthington Mid District Cup by scoring four tries in this entertaining fixture at Duffryn Pennar Park. The visitors went in front with an early penalty but Mount hit back shortly after, when, from a scrum 20 metres out, centre Kieron Olden made a midfield break to outpace the defence and score mid way out. Outside half Josh Lewis, who was in superb kicking form throughout the match, converted and ten minutes later, kicked a superb 54 metre penalty to put the Old Firm 10-3 up. Llantwit had a spell of pressure in and around the Mount 22 which resulted in a forward scoring a converted try from a scrum to bring the scores level at 10-10. Virtually from the restart, Mount scrum half, Marcus Clyne, took a quick penalty after a scrum offence and linked with centre Dale Keepin who showed his pace over 35 metres to round the Llantwit full back in typical style for a fitting 100th try for the Club – a great personal achievement - which Josh Lewis converted with a beautifully struck conversion from near the corner to put Mount 17-10 up. Although Llantwit put a multi phase move together that took play up to the Mount 22, a turnover resulted in centre Kieron Olden starting a counter attack, taken on by Josh Lewis into the Llantwit 22. With the visitors’ defence stretched, the Old Firm moved the ball wide to flanker Chris Edmunds and he put full back Gavin Roberts over for Mount’s third try, which Lewis once again struck sweetly between the posts for a 24-10 lead at half time. Although against the wind at the start of the second half, the Old Firm increased their lead after 44 minutes. Prop Gavin Powell, playing his 199th game for the Old Firm, started a counter attack, from which Mount gained a penalty and kicked to the corner. From the lineout, the Mount pack set up a driving maul for debutant second row, Shaun Brown, to crash over unopposed. To complete a superb night’s kicking display, Lewis converted once again from the corner, to take Mount up to 31-10. Llantwit were not finished though and from a driving maul from a 5 metre lineout, they got over for their second try of the night. The Old Firm introduced Youth players, Ross Davies at scrum half and Jarrod Parfitt, at second row, with both noticeably contributing to the Mount cause. Davies was in the thick of the action and almost got away in the final 10 minutes for at try, while debutant Parfitt contributed to the forward battle. Promising Youth wing Josh Davies, also made his senior debut in the last ten minutes. This win put the Old Firm in the quarter final of the Worthington Mid District Cup where they will travel to Rhydyfelin or Bargoed on a date to be arranged. This Saturday, Mountain Ash RFC’s Duffryn Pennar Park, will host the Rhondda and East Glamorgan’s second XV cup competition, the Mel Davies Cup, where Mountain Ash Athletic welcome Bargoed II. Mount coaches Mark Anderson and Garan Hill and captain, Jonathan Lock and his team are hoping for good local support for this match. Entrance for all adults is £3. Mountain Ash Youth welcome Cefn Coed to Caedrawnant in the Blues League, kick off 2:30pm, who they cannot underestimate if they are to maintain top spot in the Division, after a hard game earlier this season.
