MWFC 3rds v Edinburgh Northern 3rds
Another great win for MWFC: the 4th on the trot against a very stuffy Edin Northern team who stuck to their task very well until the second half - when superior fitness and skill levels shone through!!
Why do we never seem to start very well? Are we slow starters, or we are just very good at fore play!? Edin Northern for the first 8mins had us fighting with our backs to the wall and it was more good luck than hard work that stopped EN from scoring. We have to get our game heads on quicker I think. Another team could have been 2 tries to the good before we started and by then it would have been game over.
That’s it I’ve had my rant!! Apart from the first 8mins it was another great day for MWFC that are building and building towards a very good team.
Chris Dove got the show on the road with a tap penalty and scoring. This gave the forwards some momentum and they got into the game with good work with Paul Young scoring from short range. Our 9 Ian Nicol had a great break that brought out the best from EN with a good tackle to stop him from going over for a score. We also manned up this week with improved tackling over all. But D Liddle at 10, in particular, stuck in some good hits to stop EN from running through our line.
EN were up for the game in the first half and came back at us, and their good work was rewarded with a try to make the score 10-7 (or is it 7-10?). This stung us into harder work that was good to see from the comfort of the side line! J Whitehouse - our eventual man of the match and Capt - made a brilliant break from inside his own 22 and streaked to the try line. His legs were unable to take him the full way but Chris Dove was on hand to take the pass and score under the posts. Half time 17-7.
The second half got under way and the gates opened for MWFC. I think our fitness levels helped us and our subs, used sensibly by “JR”-the-coach, became the match winners. Jimmy W showed why his team mates voted for him MotM, as he made a fair few breaks: one resulting in his own try starting from 20 yrds inside his own half. This time his legs got him there! The Teapot (Tyler) was on and his big charges through EN’s defence resulted in another 3 tries. The other scorers were Jordan Usher, Andy Todd (making his come back following his antipodean adventures. But the try machine was Chris Dove with 4 tries to his credit!!
The DoD was awarder to Spoons (or is it now Bamby?) following another quick break from Chris Dove who ran some excellent angles all day made good yardage but was double tagged into touch but was able to pass inside to Bamby. Let's give him credit for being there at least! He caught the ball while doing the splits, stood up and tried to run to score, unfortunately EN had the cover to stop him!!!
Nick Matheson made a good break through the middle, passed to Dave Gill who kept going forward and eventually passed to Jordan Usher for his try. It just proves experience counts!
It was a good day at the office for MWFC even to the point “JR” said he fancied getting his boots back on. Guys, let’s keep playing like you have over the last 4 weeks and make sure JR doesn’t pull on his boots. The average age of the team would rocket never mind the weight of the forwards!!!! (Keep it as "JR-the-couch-potato"!).
The discussion after the game to award the MotM showed we are getting better as a lot of names were mentioned for the award. Well done to all.
As far as the fixture card goes we have a game next Saturday v Livingston away. So keep in touch via Facebook and if down at training. What do I mean “if”! You will be down for training won’t you!!!
Also we have a visiting side on Friday v the “Ottawa Indians” so no matter what happens let's all get down to support and make their visit memorable.
Well done to all involved in the squad, keep up the hard work as it is only now showing the benefits. Just remembered!! Thanks to Davie Oliver who played for EN in the second half and stripped Tyler of the ball, come on Tyler!!
