Match Report - Staines Town (away) - Pre-season Friendly
0 - 1 (27m, Coles); 0 - 2 (43m, Coles); 0 - 3 (45m, Williams); 0 - 4 (75m, Soares); 0 - 5 (81m, Williams)
Rebels joint manager Neil Baker had mixed feelings after Slough Town's comprehensive victory at Southern League Staines Town on Saturday, despite a 5-0 score line.
Perry Coles and Manny Williams both scored twice with Louie Soares also on target, but Baker was unhappy with aspects of the performance.
“I was a little bit disappointed with aspects of the game today. We had passages of play where we played good football and asked a lot of questions, and in other parts we were a bit sloppy. We could have been a little more professional in how we went about ourselves today.”
Baker acknowledged there were several positives as well – another five goals and a clean sheet, and his side restricted Staines to only a few opportunities.
Slough dominated the first half and should really have been a couple of goals in front in the opening quarter of an hour, with James Dobson and Warren Harris having efforts saved and Perry Coles seeing a shot kicked off the line.
It was only a matter of time before Slough took the lead, and Coles capitalised on hesitant Staines defending by finishing well.
Dobson hit a post and Coles missed a good chance, but the striker was able to add his second of the game on 43 minutes, slotting home after Dobson nodded down a cross from George Wells.
And on the stroke of half time it was three as Manny Williams smashed the ball home after lovely link-up play with Dobson.
Baker was frustrated with the way his side started the second half, and with several changes made – including playing Guy Hollis and Nathan Smart at right-back and left-back respectively – felt there wasn’t enough tempo in the game.
Staines hit the bar twice in the space of five minutes in the second period with Slough less of an attacking threat than in the first.
But the Rebels finished the game well and added another two goals. With fifteen minutes remaining, Soares ran on to a deflected pass from Scott Davies and fired home.
Slough missed numerous chances to add to their tally, and Williams wrapped up the scoring nine minutes from the end, finding space to convert Smart’s low cross.
A tougher test awaits the Rebels on Tuesday evening at Arbour Park, with National League Boreham Wood the visitors.
