Sunday 8th April 2018 - Nailsea 17 v Yatton 14
A great win against close opposition!
Nailsea & Backwell 17 : Yatton 14
Tries: Charlie, Joe, Sam Conversion; Lewis (off the crossbar)
The View from the Touchline (after a couple of Thatchers)
Luckily I don't get to write many match reports - you'll see why......Dry, windless, warmish day - perfect rugby weather for a local derby with Mr Morris reffing. What more could you want? No one can deny the effort of N&B, an early Yatton try could have spelled the start of a disaster....but that is the old N&B. On display was a gutsy performance from an entire team with a desire to WIN !! A game SO exciting parents shouted themselves hoarse and Paul got cramp !!
Yatton scored first but, not perturbed, Charlie sprinted uphill for our first try, an individual effort but arising from our forwards winning the ball. (5 -7) Then Jonty provided a masterful offload for Joe to run in another long range effort. Lewis kicked a bouncer off the crossbar for 12-7. Second half and Yatton added another try and conversion (12-14), but we had the hill....
A cleverly worked line out in Yatton's 22 saw Will power towards the line, only to knock on (one for the TMO I think - but dis-allowed). Yatton kept coming close to our line but the defence was awesome, not allowing them to score again. Fitness held out as did the determination to win and the pack fought hard to get Sam over the line for a 17 - 14 victory. Could have been more if Toby's boot hadn't come off as he streaked down the wing!
That is the easy bit....now to the tough bit.
Lots went well but players were still isolated on fast runs, the usual suspects (you know who you are) did some marvellous tackles, try saving tackle on the wing (Jack B). Some other tackles closely resembled Sumo wrestling (Jack R) with still too many people pulling shirts, high tackles and spinning people around (ankles, ankles, ankles) !!
The offside rule caught us out a couple of times, but it did for Yatton as well. 'White line fever' was a bit apparent as everyone made an effort to score and maybe the discipline broke down a little close to the try line. The team needs to score, not individuals...but at least everyone is eager to get their name on the sheet.
All in all - a great game to watch, real effort and determination to make up for our earlier loss against Yatton. Charlie against Carlos was a foot race that got everyone shouting. If we could harness that drive and positive vibe every week N&B would be invincible !!
Next Week - Chew Valley Away - then Tour II (the chaos continues).....our visit to the 'pointy end'. If we can come away with another tour win, Tex losing at spoof and the team spirit enhanced like last year it will be a great weekend away.
