Fourths win thriller

Fourths win thriller

Never mind the John Huck / Ben Barrow show, the real game in town on Saturday was happening on the Top Pitch as our boys took on the might of Windermere.

The visitors opted to take first knock, with Ben Atkinson and Josh Irving taking the new ball, Ben bowling with genuine pace, consistently beating the bat. But it was Josh who made the first breakthrough, Vaughan Spencer taking a smart catch behind the sticks.

Thereafter, regular bowling changes brought all our bowlers into the attack, and each time a partnership developed, Harris Wood, Harry Smith and Ryan Martin chipped in with a wicket apiece, and there were 3 for Andy Moscrop.

Finally, following an economical 5 overs from Ben Stafford, Messrs Atkinson and Irving returned to wrap up the Windermere innings on 102 all out.

In reply, Mick Notley, Josh Irving, and Ben Stafford made steady progress and had half the required runs on the board at drinks. Maybe it was something in the orange juice, as we now suffered a mini collapse, with only Reece Irving batting with any authority. When he departed, the score stood on 63 for 8 - 40 required- and Windermere sensing victory.

Enter Nigel Atkinson, ( Ben's dad ) and Vaughan Samson. These two batted with extreme care and mounting confidence, and slowly but surely, in 1s and 2s, advanced the score into the high 80s. In desperation, Windermere brought back there opening bowlers. This proved decisive. Feeding off a bit of pace on the ball, Vaughan crashed a boundary, and Nigel two more to bring the scores level. Then, with one to win, Vaughan was trapped LBW.

At this stage of the game, you couldn't wish for a better man than Ryan Martin to be striding to the crease. He looked the calmest player on the pitch as he solidly struck an immaculate off drive through a tight ring of fielders for the winning run.

A great game, which will stay in the memory of all who took part or watched the story unfold.
