Newbury A’s 50 - Banbury II’s 5
Newbury A’s: Crowther, Weston, Carter, Beale, Bull, Moore, Birch, Gibb (c) N.Mason, S.Mason, Wallace, Mansbridge, O’Keefe, Storton, Mayo. Subs: Paice, Trott, Highton, Steffan, Hawkins
Newbury went to Banbury knowing that a win plus a bonus point would finally secure them promotion from BBO 4. Banbury started brightly but after only 5 mins, found themselves camped inside their 22 for the majority of the first half. Breaks from Wallace, Weston and Mason failed to breach the Banbury try line and Beale was unlucky to be held up whilst trying to ground the ball. After 20 mins of sustained pressure, Newbury went 3 points ahead with a penalty from Wallace. This seemed to stir Banbury who broke out of their half and chased a deep kick, which was touched down by a sliding Banbury player, inches from the deadball line. After the resulting kick off, Newbury went on the attack but failed to break the Banbury defensive line, with moments of ill discipline costing Newbury crucial field positions.
Half time. Newbury 6 - Banbury 5
Newbury started the second half determined to extend their narrow one point lead. Clever kicking from Wallace and the Mason brothers put great pressure on the Banbury back 3. The Newbury pack fronted by Cowther and Carter were driving the Banbury forwards off the ball in the scrum creating an ideal platform for Birch, Mansbridge and Mayo to pick holes in the Banbury defence resulting in the first try. A well worked line out, followed by a great driving maul by the Newbury forwards allowed Highton to squeeze over the try line. This move appeared to increase Newbury’s confidence and tries followed from Mayo, Steffan, Mansbridge and Wallace (who also added the extra’s) to wrap up this entertaining game.
Captains Section: Fantastic team performance resulting in a well deserved victory. The defence was once again very solid, limiting Banbury’s attacking opportunities. Final game of the 2011/2012 season – April 14th at home to Chipping Norton. Lets finish the season on a high!
