The Newcastle Dragons was formed in 1984 as the Newcastle Welsh Rugby Union Club at the Premier Hotel in Broadmeadow and has always had a team playing grade rugby in the Newcastle and Hunter Valley Rugby Union competition. At this point in time the club was based in Hamilton.
