Newent Come Second Again
Cinderford 279 for 4
Newent 58 for 7
Cinderford won by 221 runs
On Saturday 11th June Cinderford St Johns 2nd XI welcomed Newent 3rds in the Cheltenham, Gloucester and Forest Cricket League Division 2 West. The rain during the morning finally relented before 1300 but the covers had fully protected the pitch and with the outfield and run ups damp but playable, Newent won the toss and elected to bowl. Their team included 6 players from their Under 13 side, two of whom, Harvey Sutton and Natty Phillips were playing the first game of adult cricket, and were somewhat dwarfed by the age and experience of their opponents.
Newent used 7 bowlers attempting to dislodge the Cinderford batsmen, but they batted consistently, the lowest and highest scores of 23 and 75 , both not out were recorded by J Coleman and L Martin respectively. Harvey Sutton though took a wicket with his second ball. Cinderford amassed a creditable 279 for 4 in their 40 overs.
Newent as in the previous two weeks were short of recognised batsmen, and had not reached 100 in either of these innings. The same fate looked inevitable as S Jenkins bowled his 8 overs of off spin for 9 runs to great effect and obtained considerable movement off the wicket accounting for the first 4 wickets to fall. at the other end S Baker bowled 8 overs with 6 of them maidens of most accurate fast bowling. Harvey Sutton then batted with application for several overs. Then Natty Phillips who kept wicket well for Newent now scored 14 not out in a partnership with the Captain Terry Nixon who had opened the batting and resisted all efforts to dismiss him until the 37th over when he was out for 21. As a result Newent were not dismissed and closed on 55 for 7, indeed the match even overran some of the England v Russia Euro 16 football match which had not looked likely earlier in the innings.
Cinderford fully deserved their victory and the comprehensive margin of the win was not at all flattering. But credit must also go to all of Newent's youngsters who gave of their best and particularly to the two playing their first adult game.
