Third away from home
Pakend 144 all out
Newent 145 for 9
Newent won by 1 wicket
On Saturday 23rd July, Newent 3rd XI played the return fixture away to Parkend 2nds in Division 2 west of the cheltenham, Gloucester and Forest cricket league.
Newent won the toss and asked the home team to bat. Scoring freely, Andy Taylor again looking in fine form as did young Josh Middlecote. A change of bowling saw Chloe Skelton change the match, forcing false shots to be played from which Taylor and Middlecote were caught for 33 and 34 respectively and continued to bowl tightly trapping Tim Martin LBW for 12 in a spell of 5 overs for 22 runs. Laurence Hull was the other stand out bowler claiming 4 for 10 from just 6 overs. Parkend were dismissed for 144 in the 29th over.
The Newent innings began with Middlecote and Martin bowling challenging 5 over spells, moving the ball off the seam and in the air. Matt Morgan who opened the innings batted stylishly for 41, the highest score of the day and was well supported by Chloe Skelton with 16 in a 3rd wicket partnership that took Newent half way to the target. However wickets fell regularly until Newent reached 116 for 7, with the overs running out. But the match was not over yet, three of Newent's under 13 players then fought hard showing real determination to edge Newent towards the target. Harry Pitcher playing particularly well for 16, supported by Natty Phillips and Jack Robbins.
With two overs to go Newent required 2 to win with the last pair Andy Robbins and laurence Hull at the crease. Still the drama continued, Simon Gane bowled a well crafted maiden, and the first four balls of Van de Burgh's over, the final one of the match were also dot balls. All permutations of the result were still possible but I doubt that many of the watchers correctly predicted the outcome nor how it would occur. The fifth ball was a wide levelling the scores, still with two balls to go and the next ball was also a wide and Newent were victorious, though neither not out batsmen scored a run.
