Newent II 24 Pts – Old Cryptians II 12 Pts
Home fans worried before the kick off how the boys would fare with half a dozen stalwarts away on a stag do but they needn’t have worried because the lads that Lodgey and Sam Wallace got hold of did very well and racked up the teams second win in this league.
With no recognised front row players, the match was played with uncontested scrums from the start.
Jordon Devries got among the opposition from the kick off palming back for the pack to clean up and drive forward. Shortly afterwards Matt Merrett made a nice run in midfield to set the tone for the match.
A neat pass from inside centre Will Ormand found outside half Ollie Mansfield looping round to take the return pass. Mansfield threw a dummy pass and stepped inside the defence to run in a fine score for Newent. Jack Carpenter converted.
A good catch and drive by Jim Smith followed the restart but the ball was lost in the resulting maul and Cryptians were able to get deep into Newent territory for the first time in the match. Stout defence denied them any reward and play returned to the visitor’s half. Newent were playing well and any threat posed by the visitors was snuffed out by the Newent defence with Will Ormand and Mansfield prominent among the tacklers.
Josh Ormand, having his first start at scrum half was doing well and a big kick into the opposition 22 was followed up with a great chase and tackle by Jordon Devries to keep pressure on Cryptians. Shortly afterwards Mansfield again sold an outrageous dummy to open a huge hole in the visitor’s defence which he duly raced through to score beside the posts. Carpenter converted.
A good run down the right by Jack Carpenter supported by Jack Devries took play to the Cryptians line but at the resulting maul Newent infringed and the visitors were able to clear their line. Jordon Devries was forced to leave the field with a nasty hand injury and was replaced by Lee Ormand, father of Josh and brother of Will.
Cryptians were able to take play into the Newent 22 from time to time and from one such incursion Josh Ormand put in another good relieving kick and this time it was Jack Devries who followed up. Steadying himself as he neared the catcher the winger was able to make the tackle and keep play in the visitor’s half.
Cryptians enjoyed their best period just before half time being held up over the Newent line several times. None did more during this great defensive effort than Liam Devries, but the hooker eventually took a heavy knock to the neck and had to come off just before half time. Alex Penning came on for his first match for Newent (maybe his first match in adult rugby?) and he did OK.
HT Score: Newent 12 Pts – Old Cryptians 0 Pts
At half time Newent made several substitutions with Jamie Legg coming on to make his debut for Newent at scrum half with Josh Ormand moving to the wing and Sam Goulding going into the centre with Jack Carpenter moving to the wing and Jack Devries taking a spell on the bench.
Soon after the second half began, Matt Merrett showed a superb touch of class. Taking the ball on his 22 he feigned to kick several times completely wrongfooted his would be tacklers and in no time at all was on the opposition 22. Cryptians were subsequently able to take play back to their 10-metre line where the ball found itself in Sam Goulding’s hands. The centre pinned back his ears and with a typical barnstorming run took play inside the Cryptians 22 where he drew the remaining defence and released Josh Ormand to score on the right wing, his first try in senior rugby. Superb. Carpenter’s conversion attempt from near the touchline fell just short. Jamie Legg was showing to good effect at scrum half with some sniping runs and a tidy pass.
The second half saw the best and worst of Jordon Devries, pluckily back on the pitch still nursing a sore hand, in one play he took on and beat his man perfectly showing what a very good player he could be. Then, shortly after he let himself get drawn into a confrontation right in front of the referee, just as young Sean Clifford was racing under the posts for his first try in adult rugby. Now it wasn’t all down to Jordon but there are times when you must pull away, button it and get on with the game. The nett result: a yellow card, try disallowed and 10 minutes with 14 men – enough said.
Goulding, who didn’t start due to work commitments, was in scintillating form and another run, down the left this time, saw him hand on to Carpenter and just as we thought the winger was bound to score he lost his footing and the chance was lost. Yet another run by Goulding, from inside his own half, took play into the opposition 22 where he found Mansfield at his shoulder and the outside half made no mistake as he strode over for his hat trick of tries.
At this stage Will Ormand, who put in a great shift, had to leave the field. He was replaced with yet another debutant in Rob Davies who went to the wing with Jack Carpenter resuming duties at centre. Soon afterwards, Sam Goulding also had to leave the field which brought Jack Devries back on.
Despite the disruption Newent still looked solid, with Lee Ormand rolling back the years, Dan Heath showing to good effect in lineouts and loose and Jim Smith putting in some crunching tackles. Also, the pack collectively showed great determination in holding up numerous Cryptian attempts to cross the line. The unsung heroes here were Nathan Awford (always gives 100%) and Tom Mortimer.
However, this was the period in which Cryptians scored a couple of tries.
The game ended in an unfortunate way with Jack Devries injuring himself after another of his charging runs down the right wing. A clash of heads saw Jack laying with a potential neck injury and the first aiders present decided he could not be moved. The referee blew the final whistle a few minutes early but the result stands. Jack was taken to hospital for a check-up but happily discharged later Saturday evening with muscle damage to his neck, painful but he will be fine.

Comment: Cracking display by all. Some superb running, gutsy tacking and stout defending. This game had it all. In addition, we saw two young scrum halves come in and do a good job for us, what more could we ask.
