Dockers continue recent improvement with strong display against Medway Dragons

Newham Dockers U14s continued their recent run of good form with a spirited display against Medway Dragons, which they only narrowly lost.

The Dockers had the perfect start when they kicked off and forced the Medway catcher into touch thanks to a great chase by Joseph Kraw and Michael Laskov. On the very first play of the set, Anthony Sinclair found Dovydas Jankauskas who showed great speed to touch down in the corner to put the Dockers ahead 4-0.

Both sides then responded with some tough tackling, Medway forcing a turnover which led to them posting their first score of the game which was converted to put them into a 6-4 lead. This was followed quickly by another try as the Dockers gave their opponents too much space to use, the Dragons crossing out wide for 10-4.

The Newham side then regrouped and started showing their talent in attack, with scrum half David Young pulling the strings alongside Donatas Vainorius which led to Brad Rackham crossing next to the posts to level the scores at 10-10.

After a blistering start, the Dockers were starting to tire and they conceded two tries in quick succession, due to a combination of clever Medway attack and some sloppy defending. Medway took the scores out to 22-10 after converting both.

The final play of the first half saw the Dockers claw themselves closer to the Dragons, when Jankauskas forced his way over after good work by Seb Solano and Ranjit Singh to gain dangerous field position. Sinclair added the extras to bring the score to 22-16 at half-time.

After a much-need half time break, the Dockers started the second half with a renewed sense of purpose and defended well as a team with Tyron Lukun and Alfie Sillitoe putting in good tackles on a regular basis.

The Medway side were able to use their experience and skill to tire out the Dockers defenders before running smartly from dummy half to create gaps, and scored two tries back to back, pushing the score out to 32-16 and leaving the Newham team with a mountain to climb to get back into the game.

The side from east London did manage to get themselves over the whitewash next, with full back Owen Flindall combining speed and strength to score a well-deserved try before converting himself to reduce the deficit to 32-22.

Another slip in defence allowed Medway to add another try, despite great work in defence from debutant Charlie Landers and Kelvin Agyen, leaving the score 38-22 with three minutes to play.

Not to be outdone, the Dockers came back at the Dragons again, with Seb Solano’s break causing havoc in the Dragons defence before Rackham was able to cross again, the kick unsuccessful in difficult windy conditions, making the full time score 38-26 to the Dragons.

Speaking after the game, Dockers coach Chris Williams said: ‘Despite losing today’s game I’m thoroughly proud of the boys and their performance. The improvement from the start of the season to now is huge, and that’s down to the commitment of the players. With three games left, I want us to keep performing like this and show the rest of the league that we’ll be a team to watch next season.’
