Record breaker takes one of the forward positions

Neville Holdgate has been voted into the Greatest Ever New Mills team by supporters, voting conducted on the website, email, in the club and on Twitter.

Local lad Holdgate was a prolific scorer for the club over a number of years, most famously the 1937/38 campaign.

For the first time ever, we are able to show the remarkable season Holdgate produced in 1937/8 to set up a club record for the number of goals scored in a single campaign. Neville or “Ned” as his fellow players called him notched up 61 goals in league and cup matches.

The only source of information is from the old copies of the High Peak Reporter, and sadly we could not find the odd missing game – he may well have scored more.

During the summer break we will endeavour to see if any of the missing match reports can be located. We would say almost certainly that the total of 61 is a little short. A great achievement from a good all round sportsman.
