New Mills AFC - The Millers

by

New Mills remain unbeaten on their travels this season after they secured three valuable NPL Division One North points at Wakefield on Tuesday evening.
With Harry Noon and Chris Young missing through injury, Jordan Armstrong, fresh from a fine cameo substitute performance against Ossett Albion, came into the starting eleven and the youngster should have opened the scoring in the second minute. Dave Fitzpatrick's through ball found Armstrong whose effort unluckily cannoned back into the play off the inside of the post.
He didn't dwell on his misfortune for long though and quickly made amends four minutes later by setting up the opening goal for Steve Moore. Armstrong's pinpoint right wing cross found the striker who decisively headed past Danny Trueman to register his fifth goal of the season.
Wakefield searching for their first home win in over a year equalised with their first significant attack of the game in the sixteenth minute. Full back Liam Millen was dispossessed down the left wing and the resulting cross was neatly steered home by David Boardman. This strike was Wakefield's first NPL goal of the season after drawing blanks in their opening four fixtures.
Back came The Millers almost immediately and regained the lead within ninety seconds. Jordan Armstrong's pace was too much for the home defence to handle and he accurately found the back of the net via the base of the upright from the narrowest of angles.
Kristian Cox, making a rare start, should have wrapped the points up for New Mills and collected the matchball personally but had left his shooting boots at home as he squandered three excellent opportunities in the opening half hour.
Leading 2-1 at the interval, The Millers were forced into a half time substitution when Leon Grandison replaced Steve Moore but if anything, the change injected fresh impetus into the visiting attack. In fact it took Grandison only twelve minutes to get on the scoresheet when he collected Kristian Cox's pinpoint through ball and rounded the onrushing goalkeeper with comparative ease.
Back came Wakefield again though and they reduced the arrears just after the hour when David Boardman's deft header found the corner of James Coates's net.
Despite some defensive frailties, The Millers constantly looked dangerous going forward and scored two quick goals to effectively kill the contest. Kristian Cox finally got his goal when the home keeper could only parry Carlos Meakin's powerful free kick into his path and the alert striker tapped home the rebound from close range. Then Leon Grandison's burst of pace took him clear of the defensive line and he confidently placed an accurate shot past the despairing Danny Trueman.
That really should have been game, set and match for New Mills but again they switched off at the back and allowed Wakefield a glimmer of hope when in the seventy third minute, a corner kick was diverted in at the near post and was officially credited as an own goal by Michael Bowler.
Despite one or two alarms in the closing stages in the visiting penalty area, there was to be no further addition to the scoreline. Whilst scoring five goals away from home is always an achievement, manager Ally Pickering will be keen for his players to stop making life hard for themselves by cutting out the mistakes which nearly gifted Wakefield a way back into the match which should have been comfortably put to bed in the first hour.
