INTRODUCTION TO NEW MILTON & DISTRICT MINIS

New Milton & District RFC runs a thriving minis section with separate player squads and coaching teams for each age group from under 6 to under 12. Mini rugby age groups are based on school years as follows:

NMRFC U6 - Yr.1 & below
NMRFC U7 - Yr.2
NMRFC U8 - Yr.3
NMRFC U9 - Yr.4
NMRFC U10 - Yr.5
NMRFC U11 - Yr.6
NMRFC U12 - Yr.7

There are over 200 players registered to play in the Minis section at New Milton and we are always keen to welcome new members. We are happy to allow players to come along on a trial basis for 3 weeks before they need to formally join the club, so if you and your child are interested, come down to the club or speak to the relevant age group manager or coach. If you are planning to come and join us after October, we’d love to see you and your child, but please check the fixture list in case we are away!

According to the RFU regulations players learn the game according to modified formats which are designed to allow children to build gradually to the full International Rugby Board Rules. Under 7s and 8s play a fast flowing, non-contact format known as “tag” rugby with the U7s playing 4-aside and the U8s, 6-a-side. From under 9s different aspects of contact rugby are introduced and the number of players in a team is gradually increased to 13 by the time they reach U12. However, most important for the coaches in every age group is simply that the children enjoy their mini rugby and, if they do, the rugby skills, friendships and team spirit all follow.

Training and matches take place on Sunday mornings between 10am and 12 noon from the first Sunday of September until the end of April. It is a requirement of the club that all players are accompanied by a responsible adult during participation in training and matches. It is advisable for U7 and U8 children to wear - and older ages must wear - a gum shield in training and during matches. Those in the scrum are advised to wear a scrum hat. Always bring sufficient liquids to drink, both at training and matches (Small sips and often).

During the year, especially early in the season, many sessions are devoted to training which allows the coaches to spend time developing a wide variety of rugby skills, teamwork and camaraderie amongst the players. In addition, all age groups participate in fixtures against local clubs, festivals organized by New Milton & District and other rugby clubs and the highly prestigious Hampshire tournament.

All coaches are registered with the club and have completed Criminal Records Bureau checks. Please contact the Child Safeguarding officer Clare Donnelly on 07886 539 883, with any child safeguarding or welfare issues.

Everybody working at the club, whether coaching or in the clubhouse, is a volunteer and more help is always welcomed. There are over 30 volunteers working to let the children play mini rugby each Sunday. If you would like to assist in any aspect of the club, please speak to any of the managers or coaches. New Milton & District RFC's aim is to encourage as many parents as possible to actively participate in the running of the club and it offers a host of opportunities for parents to get involved. These include supporting the coaching team, taking part in social events and, most importantly, supporting children playing in teams on the pitches. New Milton & District RFC does not provide a crèche for parents to simply drop off their children.

Social events are held on a regular basis and offer an opportunity to mix with a new group of friends in a relaxing and child friendly environment.
