Not a great night for the ressies...
Newport Pagnell Town Reserves 1 Rothwell Corinthians Reserves 2
(Tuesday 28th March, 2017 : United Counties League Reserve Division)
match report by Walter Hunt
The home team got off to the worst possible start when Rothwell took the lead in the 3rd minute, with a cross from the left being met with a firm header into the top corner of the net. Rothwell threatened to increase their lead from a well-taken corner only two minutes later but goalkeeper Jonathan Thick punched clear confidently in a crowded penalty area.
A big and strong Rothwell team dominated possession for most of the first half but determined Newport Pagnell defending kept them out. Mason Coleman once again impressed with his defensive play and his passing.
A rare instance of Newport Pagnell pressure on the opposing goal in the 19th minute saw a cross from the right scrambled away from just in front of the Rothwell goal before a Newport player could get to it.
Rothwell looked the better team throughout most of the first half but could not add to their early goal.
HALF TIME 0-1
Newport Pagnell started to get into the game a bit more in the second half, but it was the visitors who scored again in the 59th minute when the home defence took too long to clear the ball and gave it away inside their own penalty area.
The Newport goalkeeper, Jonathan Thick, continued to play well and stopped several threatening Rothwell attacks by coming off his line quickly to collect dangerous through balls just ahead of oncoming opponents.
As Newport Pagnell got more possession and pressed forward more they reduced the deficit in the 64th minute. Kelvin Osei-Addo was brought down by the Rothwell goalkeeper as he took the ball around him and made no mistake with the resulting penalty.
The home team had their best period of the game in the last quarter, retaining possession better and spending more time in the Rothwell half but against a strong and well organised defence they could not quite create the chance they needed to equalise.
