Woburn & Wavendon Lionesses U12 V Newport Pagnell U12 Swans
The Season Opener
Our first league game of the season and a few new rules to contend with for this season. Offside and no retreat rule. Also a new venue for us to play at, as there will be during the season with 13 teams in our league this season.
So we arrived at Ridgmont Lower School for the away trip to our old friends at WWFC. The Girls looked resplendent in their new Green and White Kit sponsored by Aldersen Ingredients. It was almost as green as the long, lush grass gracing the turf of the school pitch interspersed by the odd crater here and there. It was going to be a challenging opening game!
We welcome a few new faces to the team this season so welcome to Maddison, who stepped up and played in goal, having played very well for the first time during the couple of friendlies we had. We also welcome Sophia, Scarlett and Stephie. A welcome sight was seeing Emily out of her cast on her broken ankle, and sitting with the girls on the subs bench to give us some support.
We took our positions and the game began, it was quickly apparent that our style play was hindered by the pitch but we continued. The training done by the team during the close season clearly paid off with some good early defensive play and some very well timed and strong tackling not going unnoticed. A particular tackle by Freya, our team and club captain, setting the tone for the match. We didn’t see much sight of the goal but our midfielders and forwards always tried to get forward and threaten as much as possible. A notable part of the game came when Maddison finally got a touch of the ball, on 14 minutes, a testament to the defensive play employed by the whole team.
The game ebbed and flowed with potential attacks from both teams but not amounting to clear attempts at goal. We stopped for half time, giving instruction where needed and well deserved praise the display so far.
The game continued with few chances for either team, the occasional injury, quickly recovered though. The WW Girls game plan of route one football was nullified well and the occasional corner here and there demonstrated the development the Newport Girls had gained over the summer period.
A much anticipated game ending as a 0-0 draw was probably a fair result but we are unlikely to play on such a poor pitch again this season.
