Stotfold Juniors Girls vs Newport Pagnell Town FC Swans
Another away game and what a game
So over to Stotfold for a game that was anticipated to be a cold affair from previous experience. So with everyone all wrapped up appropriately we headed to the pitch.
Today was the first match in which we had lost Sophia due to a foot injury and in the warm up Ava indicated she had injured her foot, a quick fitness test and a thumbs up that she was ok to start.
We kicked off and Stotfold put us under pressure from the very start, the first 8 minutes was relentless Stotfold pressure with very little of the ball in their half. The Swans saw off three very quick corners. On 10 minutes a rasping shot was taken and was well caught and held by Emily.
A couple of early substitutions saw Ava come off with a recurrence of the foot injury and Evie came off too with Scarlett and Melody replacing them respectively.
Late into the first half of continuous pressure saw the Swans get a quick break with Scarlett bursting through the defence taking shot, alas wide but nonetheless a positive step forward. A well-earned minor rest for the Swans defence that stood resolute against wave after wave of attack.
Just on the half time break saw Mia make a great tackle, the ball recycled by Stotfold, was again shot at Emily who stood firm and kept the score at 0-0 as the half time whistle blew
Second half started with what felt like a little less pressure for the swans and almost instantly saw Zara make a run in the left channel and take a shot that resulted in a corner. The corner played in and cleared comfortably by the Stotfold defence saw the game return the pressure we had felt during the first half. On 41 mins the Stotfold attack got into the Swans box and yet another save by Emily, saw a quick follow up and the another save by Emily.
A couple of minutes later and a little indiscipline in the Swans defence saw the ball worked into an open goal scenario, luckily with the ball poked wide and the game remained at 0-0.
10 minutes to go and with the game looking like a draw a break into the right hand side of the Swans penalty box saw a tackle by Freya ’Goikoetxea’ (google it!) give away a cast iron penalty. Both coaches, head in hands, daren’t watch. The ball placed, a run up, a firm shot ……..saved and cleared by Emily, what a star!
In the dying embers of the game and a final attack saw the Stotfold attack run through the heart of the team and a momentary lapse of concentration saw them clean through on goal and the shot nestling in the back of the net broke the Swans hearts after a truly well fought battle. The game finishing 1-0 to Stotfold bought to an end a run of very difficult games where the Swans can be very proud of the performances put in.
The parents from Stotfold were very complementary of Emily’s performance in goal and a very well deserved Player of The Match.
Well done to Neil and his for never giving up, a great game.
Next time……..weather permitting!
